INCREASED CASES OF RECURRENT UTI-URINARY TRACT INFECTION AND INDISCRIMINATE USE OF VAGINAL WASHES
In our day to day Gynaec practice we are seeing a lot of increase in recurrent UTI (Urinary tract infection) cases.
It leads to burden on health care, use of multiple courses of antibiotics,absenteeism from work of studies.
One causative factor is that the number of working women , especially in cities are increasing. It leads to usage of public toilets. They are generally western style and hence larger area of body parts are in contact with the seat, which is not hygienic.
One more factor is also commonly seen that women are using vaginal washes on a regular basis even though there is no infection.
Though there are no randomized studies conducted, but when we ask them to stop using vaginal washes and put them on probiotics,we see that the number of recurrences reduce.
One of the reason may be restoration of natural protective biological flora of vagina.
The question arises, whether these commercial products should be allowed to propagate themselves of public media.
In our experience, they seem to be causing more harm than good.
