Fetal autopsy aims to provide a clear and detailed report to the practicing clinician in the event of adverse fetal outcome.

Finding out the cause to the extent possible will bring emotional closure for the family who is left to deal with the fact that they are not taking the live baby home.

Components of fetal autopsy  

-Written & signed informed consent of parents for performing autopsy is taken.

-Clinical history of pregnant woman is taken.

-Earlier blood investigations and ultrasound reports are evaluated.

-Morphometry-various physical measurements of fetus are taken.

-Clinical photographs from various angles are taken.

-Radiography- X-Ray of bones are taken.

-External examination-external features of the fetus are noted.

-Systematic dissection and documentation of findings are carried out.

-Tissue samples are taken and sent for histopathology.

-Final reporting is done after getting all results.

-Counselling of parents is done & further management plan for future pregnancy is formed.

Indications for fetal autopsy

-Congenital malformation

-Recurrent fetal death

-Hydrops fetalis-abnormal accumulation of fluid under fetal skin

-IUGR-Intra Uterine Growth Retardation-weight gain of fetus is not appropriate to the gestation period (duration of pregnancy)

-Infections

-Intra Uterine Fetal Death- IUFD

-Inevitable abortion

Sample & documentary requirement

-The entire fetus and umbilical cord, along with the placenta, should be immersed in 10% buffered formalin & sent in appropriately labelled containers

-For fetus of 20 weeks gestation or above, a death certificate should be sent.

-Informed consent form signed by parents along with xerox of their photo ID should be attached.

-A test requisition form with clinical details of the mother and fetus/neonate.

-A sample release form (attested by the doctor/medical director of the hospital) to approve the transport of the sample.
