Weight gain during pregnancy-Its reason & significance

A pregnant lady is bound to gain weight during the course of her normal pregnancy .At completion of ninth month of the pregnancy, a 3 kg baby will be born, a placenta of around  ½ kg will be expelled.Weight also increases as uterus and other reproductive organs increase in size to accommodate growing baby.Homonal changes and water retention in the body are mainly responsible for this phenomenon along with accumulation of proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Most of the weight gain occurs in later 2/3 part of the pregnancy.
Abnormal weight gain in the form of both less or more than expected has got particular medical significance.
